Bennie Drake, a woman whose heart was as huge as the Texas sky she was born under, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, resilience, and an abundance of love.
Born on July 13, 1945, in Gatesville, Texas, Bennie was the daughter of Ben Walters and Willie Martin. From her earliest days in the heart of Texas, she carried with her a spirit of strength and a deep-rooted sense of family that would define her entire life. She shared almost 55 beautiful years of marriage with her husband, Joe Drake, with whom she raised a large and vibrant family.
Bennie’s spirit lives on through her five children and their families: her son, Ricky Drake and his wife Marty of Cameron, Texas; her daughter, Sonja Reynolds of Owl Creek, Texas; her daughter, Jorine Drake and her husband Ronnie Cota of Moffat, Texas; her daughter, Raven Harrington and her husband Eric of Hamilton, Texas; and her son, Kevin Drake of Owl Creek, Texas, her 4 sisters , Betty Mayberry, Carrie Harding, Faye Evans, Shirley Truelove and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben Walters and Willie Martin. Brother Wayne Walters, sister Lois Hargraves, daughter in law Lynda Treece, granddaughter Lyndsey Turner and great granddaughter Meagan Miller.
Throughout her years, Bennie was known for her tireless work ethic, holding various positions across several industries. While she took pride in every job she held, her “favorite job” was one that required no resume but demanded all of her heart:-and her greatest joy —not in a workplace, but in the hearts of her family. To the world, she was Bennie; but to her 16 grandkids, 32 great-grandkids and 17 great-great grandkids, she was the legendary “Granny B”; and “Mamaw”; She was the keeper of stories, the binder of wounds, and the ultimate source of unconditional support.
Central to her life was her unwavering faith. 8 years ago, she made the life-changing decision to accept Christ into her heart, a turning point that brought her immense peace and purpose. She was a proud and devoted member for 9 years of The New Oasis Worship Center in Gatesville, Texas, where she found a second family and a community of faith. Bennie lived as a testament to God’s grace, proving that family it just about blood—it’s about who shows up and who loves unconditionally.
Bennie was the thread that wove her family together, attending every celebration and offering a steady hand through every hardship. Her home was a place of refuge, and her heart was a place of belonging. Which In the quiet heart of Owl Creek, Texas, she was more than a neighbor; she was a matriarch to every child who crossed her porch.
Though she has moved on to her eternal rest, the lessons she taught and the love she gave will echo through the generations of Drake’s to come. We find comfort in knowing that she is at peace, likely watching over us all with that familiar eagle eye we all know to well.
