Funeral services for Betty Bounds, 91, of Temple, will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the Dossman Funeral Home in Belton. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Monday evening, August 31, 2026, and again from noon until 2:00 PM Tuesday, prior to the funeral service.
Betty passed as graciously as she lived on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at her home in Temple, TX surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born August 2, 1935 in Nederland, the daughter of Bradley Joseph Johnson and Betty Beatrice (Fawvor) Johnson. She married J. D. Holt Sr. in 1952 in Winnie, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1972. She married James T. Bounds in 1977 in Houston. He died in 2005.
Together they welcomed five beautiful children-four daughters and one son. J.D. Sr. preceded her in death in 1972. Following his passing, Betty pursued a new chapter in her life, attending beauty school and earning her license.
Always hungry for life she loved to travel with her husband, Jim, in their Winnebago, with a goal to visit all 50 states. When they weren’t traveling, they would go dancing, fishing and deer hunting together. He preceded her in death in 2005.
Her passion for cosmetology was another defining part of her life. She worked at numerous beauty shops throughout Houston and Winnie before later establishing herself in Belton, Texas. She proudly worked as a hairdresser for more than 50 years and owned her own business, Betty's Haircare Center at Temple Lake Park. Her dedication to her craft touched countless lives throughout the years.
Later in life, Betty found another great joy in her grandchildren. She embraced her role as Meemaw and Grandma wholeheartedly. She loved playing the piano while her grandchildren and great-grandchildren danced and sang along, just as she had done with her own children. At every family gathering, she could be counted on to bring out the dominoes and challenge anyone willing to play a game of 42. Her presence had a way of brightening every room, and her infectious laughter was cherished by all who knew her.
Betty lived a life filled with love and purpose. She was a chef, a seamstress, a hairdresser and consummate home maker. She was well known amongst family, friends and the church congregation for her homemade specialties, especially her beloved yeast rolls and cinnamon rolls. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love.
Betty was a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church and later became a member of Anchor of Hope Church, where her faith remained an important part of her life.
In addition to her two husbands, Betty was also preceded in death by two children, Cynthia Ainsworth in 2025 and J. D. Holt Jr in 2026.
She leaves behind three daughters Betty Elaine Meyer, Vollie Lorraine McClure and Joanie Renee Chambellan; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish her memory in their hearts always and forever!
