Wayne Leatherwood

Loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend Wayne Leatherwood, born May 5, 1940, in Edinburg, Texas the son of Lee Leatherwood and Annie Wakefield Leatherwood, passed away on August 11,2026 in a Temple Hospital.

In loving memory of Wayne, friends and family are invited to attend a visitation at Dossman Funeral Home in Belton, Texas on Monday, August 17, 2026 from 5-7 PM. A graveside service will follow on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at Roberts Cemetery in Troy, Texas starting at 10AM with Brother Mike Lewis officiating.

Wayne married his loving wife of 67 years Laurel Deane Stewart on December 19, 1958. Together they raised six children.

In Wayne’s early adult life he developed a love for building and racing cars. That love carried over to several of his sons whom he built hot rods with. Lots of time was spent at Academy Dragway where some of his best memories were made.

Wayne could always be found supporting his kids in their activities, most of which involved sports. He was very involved in coaching three of his boys in boxing; each becoming Golden Glove Champions in their divisions. Watching his children competing in all of their events brought him tremendous joy.

Wayne loved to travel with his wife Laurel. In particular he loved Colorado which they visited countless times. He could talk for hours about all the adventures they had together, riding four wheelers, snowmobiling, hiking, white water rafting, and just exploring nature up in the mountains but most important he couldn’t leave out all the good eating places they found along the way.

Mr. Leatherwood worked as a mechanic/electrician for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1992. He took on a little side job working for Southwest Contract to fill his time. This job gave him and his wife the opportunity to travel all over the U.S. site seeing along the way.

Mr. Leatherwood was preceded in death by his wife Laurel, May 18, 2025, one son Coy Leatherwood, August 11, 1996, his parents, two brothers Bobby Leatherwood and Danny Leatherwood and one sister, Cathy Leatherwood

Survivors include four sons, Don Sparks, Darren Leatherwood and wife Gina, Harvey Leatherwood and wife Kim, and Larry Leatherwood; One daughter Rusty Carlene Ard and husband Joe; two brothers, Jerry Leatherwood and David Leatherwood; and one sister Rosie Mays, 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Wayne was a longtime member of Faith Baptist Church in Temple.
